EDITORIAL
Global creative’s phenomenon PechaKucha Night will turn up the ‘chit-chat’ with a great line-up of speakers at 6PM, Wednesday January 25th at Garage Bar, 163 Waymouth Street, Adelaide – NO WORK the next day, so it’s a great chance to experience the Pecha vibe that’s taken the world by storm!
Funny Name, fun concept! - So what is PechaKucha? - Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of ‘chit-chat’, PechaKucha Night’s are informal, live non-profit creative ideas sharing events. Devised and launched in Tokyo, 2003, by Architects, Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, PechaKucha Night’s rest on a simple patented idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. Presenters show 20 images, which advance automatically every 20 seconds, giving presenters 6 minutes, forty-seconds to take their audience on a fast-track through their passions before the next presenters is up!
Chief speechwriter for Al Gore and contributing editor for Wired, Daniel H. Pink, says about presenting at Pecha; “Say what you need to say in six minutes and 40 seconds of exquisitely matched words and images and then sit the hell down. The result, in the hands of the masters of the form, combines business meeting and poetry slam to transform corporate cliché into surprisingly compelling beat-the-clock performance art” (Issue 15, 2009). According to Paul Barron, Co-founder of Toyko Artbeat and Web Agency AQ, the best PechaKucha Nights presentations reveal thought processes, mistakes and epiphanies with the beauty lying in “the tension between the chaos of a full-blown party and the politeness of art school critics, with the snappy pace holding it all together…[and says]…If you can tell it in a compelling way, you can tell it at Pecha Kucha” (2009).
With events now being held in more than 460 cities across the world, PechaKucha night’s have been described as “Like the internet in reverse”, and provide decision-makers, up-and-coming designers, innovators, entrepreneurs and creatives from all disciplines and walks of life, with a live audience, gallery space and an informal, fun way to network and share ideas. PechaKucha Night presentations are about stories and passions that can include anything from Mayoral visions for a city, to Architectural projects, bizarre image collections, portfolio’s, life dreams, or perhaps even a persons beloved collection of Nana Mouskouri vinyls! PechaKucha Night’s give people the chance to share ideas, gain audience, or simply indulge in a bit of mic-ed up creative fun that isn’t karaoke!
So who’s presenting at PechaKucha Night – Adelaide Volume #2.?
At only $10 per ticket, Pecha Adelaide Volume #2. will kick off the great line-up of 16 speakers, with Adelaide Zoo Project Architect, Alex Hall , who will be presenting ‘The Wake” saying; “The concept is, for every Adelaide Zoo there is a vast amount of un built work left in its wake. Unbuilt projects are equally as important and form a large amount of an Architects career. Strangely, some projects are never intended to built at all”. Glam Adelaide's Kelly Noble will be taking to the stage, along with Landscape Architect and Strategy Leader with 5000+, Sharon MacKay will present on the 5000+ project commenting that "Presenting in the PechaKucha format is challenging me to consider how to communicate such a complex project as 5000+ an Integrated Design Strategy for Inner Adelaide' in a concise way and to an informed design community. I am also hopeful that the format will be kind to my glossophobia! Well done Anna, for tirelessly curating such an event and I'm looking forward to catching up with friends and colleagues to kick start the 2012 design calendar" (2012).
Other presenters include, Alison Kershaw, DEFEEST Senior Policy Officer in Digital Productivity and Industry Engagement who’ll present a new community Digital Literacy website; CraftyPics Photographer, Michael Selge presenting ‘After Dark'; Social Media Strategist and Project Manager, Charlie Helen Robinson who’ll uncover ‘The Social Experience of Wine’ with insights from her DeadRed Wine group. Passionate about community and charity work. Business Coach and Director of Fresheyedeas, Trent Blucher, will present ‘Philanthropy...the oldest newest success principle’, sharing the 'success principles of: Abundance, Gratitude and Philanthropy (the oldest newest success principle) and his newest project “The Daily Gift”', which is set to raise more than $10M for Adelaide Youth.
The Volume #2. line-up also includes director of sustainable communications company, Ecocreative’s Director, Matthew Wright-Simon; good News journalist and founder of Our World Today, Mike Worsman; Digital Sales & Integration Manager with News Ltd, Guy Turner; Young Business Leader of the Year 2011, Tish Naughton; Public Artist and creator of the silver rings inspired by the cultural richness of the City on Osmond Terrace, Norwood and creative Director of SPUD Design, Craig Andrae; CNC Metal Sculptor, Craeg Bennett on Bio-rock, Adelaide City branding, eco-tourism and Adelaide's marine environment potential; Designer/Jeweller Peter Coombs; Health Science Research Assistant with Uni SA, Peter Lekkas and PechaKucha Night – Adelaide, City Organiser Anna Scott who will present ‘Pecha on Pecha, the what , when , how, where and why!”.
While some have likened PechaKucha Night’s to TED, PechaKucha HQ in Tokyo says that it’s a ‘…very nice complement [but it's] not quite right! TED is brilliant but very different to Pecha Kucha. TED is top down, PechaKucha is bottom up!’. Usually held in Places where ‘thinking and drinking combine’, Pecha’s informal and fun style is all about hosting interesting, ‘shiny’ events where social and cultural diversity is celebrated - integration and collaboration is enabled, along with a large dose of innovation mining, uncovering of the unexpected and a strong chaser of raucous laughter!
