Happy New 'Year of the Tiger' to all PechaKucha subscribers around the world!
A very big thank you for making last year the biggest and busiest for PechaKucha.
THE NUMBERS...
PechaKucha grew by 103 cities from 163 in 2008 to an amazing 266 in 2009 - and there were over 610 PechaKucha Nights around the world, that's over 50 a month!
THE BLOG
PechaKucha Daily. We started blogging about PechaKucha this time last year, and Jean Snow, our blogger par excellence, posted 662 times on PechaKucha Daily in 2009. Be sure to check out his daily posts about the world of PechaKucha!

THE WEBSITE
As you may have noticed, the PechaKucha website was completely redesigned a few months ago, but it officially gets launched this week now that we have ironed out most of the bugs. We have to thank our great web partners UltraSuperNew for working so hard on pulling it all together so elegantly.
http://www.pecha-kucha.org/
There are lots of great features including geolocation, so the site displays the PechaKucha Night nearest to you and all the maps geolocate too!

THE PRESENTATIONS
One feature of the new site we are particularly proud of is PechaKucha Presentations. We have spent a long time perfecting the right way to show presentations online - but we think this is it! The new PechaKucha Player built from scratch displays the presentations at 1024 x 768 pixels, that's the size of the original images you see at PechaKucha, with the live sound laid over the top. We had resisted putting presentations online because we always believe that nothing can beat being there at a live event - but there are some many brilliant presentations we would miss out on that we felt, they had to be shared globally. The format has been likened to a kind of zen TV. In this world of instant video clips and flashy presentations people have forgotten how to look, listen and digest. Check out the first presentations online at the link below - and check back every day for new postings!

Please go FULL SCREEN when you watch, amazing quality for amazing content. You can also embed the presentations in your website and blogs by clicking on the
embed button ' < > ' in the progress bar.
We only soft launched a few weeks ago and the presentations have been viewed over 60,000 times already!
THE BIG PICTURE
Beyond the numbers though, the most important thing is that the PechaKucha network has grown stronger. More and more people are sharing their work - live, in real places to real people - unlike other social networks, which are not that social at all. PechaKucha is a real tangible physical network where you meet real people and real creativity.
2009 was a tough year for all of us, but everyday we were heartened by e-mails and reports from all of you saying how PechaKucha has changed your city, your community, your lives. The constant theme in your mails last year was that PechaKucha represented the green shoots that gave people hope and a chance to show that creativity can win through in the toughest of times.
THE SPONSORS
PechaKucha is for content and not for profit. All city PechaKucha licenses are free and no money changes hands. All events are free or run with a small door charge to cover costs and maybe some beer money for the presenters if the organizers are in luck! No door percentage comes back to us. We do it for the love and inspiration. Well - we did it for one event in Tokyo back in 2003 - how it has spread to 270 cities we will never quite know!
For the last 7 years PechaKucha has been funded completely by our small architectural practice http://www.klein-dytham.com (shameless PR ;- ) and supported in part by http://www.ultrasupernew.com (more shameless PR :- )) our web partner. As PechaKucha grows, so do our overheads which are getting increasingly difficult to ignore, especially in these challenging times! Last year, for the first time, about half of our costs were covered by Autodesk - who were an amazing global partner and supporter. We hope to announce some new partnerships in the coming months. Fingers crossed.
THE THANKS
We must thank all our wonderful city organizers around the globe who find time to run PechaKucha on top of their regular day job. We must thank all the presenters who are so generous to share their work and take the PechaKucha challenge. We must also take a deep Japanese bow and say 'arigato gozaimasu' to Tomoko Kagawa and Jean Snow who are in daily contact with all the cities, blog and keep the web humming - and generally make
sure everything runs smoothly at PechaKucha HQ. We must also apologize to all our staff at Klein Dytham architecture who let us get away with this folly. Last but not least we must say a huge thank you to YOU for supporting PechaKucha Night and attending the events!
THE NEW YEAR RESOLUTION
This newsletter will be far more regular :- )
As you know architects talk (and write too much) hence we invented the
20x20 format, so we better sign off here.
Wishing you all a happy, peaceful and creative 2010!
