PKN-v33 San Francisco recap

Morning Bay Area Pecha Kucha people,
Thanks to everyone who came out friday night to what turned out to be a great hit of an evening. With a theme like "failure", how could we go wrong? Perhaps it was the sea of architects invading our fair city by the bay for the National AIA convention, or perhaps it was the recent passing of Obama's first 100-ass-kicking-days in office, but we wanted to really see if people were getting the significance of where we find ourselves today. The combination of the theme of "What's the value of FAILURE?" and the anticipation of a sharp and curious audience, PK-sf v33 offered 18 presentations to an over capacity crowd of over 400 at the Autodesk Gallery overlooking the Scenic Ferry Terminal Plaza & Embarcadero that prompted some serious thinking about what the designer in us all can be doing to be dusting our human selves of, absorbing a bit of humble learning and getting on with transforming our situation into the future we really want and that earth can really live with.
Led off by national mover and shaker and conscience for an entire profession, Architect Bob Berkebile, FAIA demonstrated how one individual can not only overcome a disaster, but go on to truly impact the course of how we as americans create the built environment for the better. Thus with the tone set for positive transformation, visionaries, thinkers and lovers of life presented ideas and conveyed experiences that ranged from Peter Exley's re-embracing the innate genius in is all through play to Graphic Designer Suzanne Lagasa's playful presentation of the lighter, more literary side of human sexuality in print. Jill Eyres and Kari Svanstrom of Group 4 Architecture revealed the deeper implications on our communities through the present transformation of libraries. And there were abundant doses of humor and surprise with Illustrator Thomas Prosek's pokes of fun at his far-flung clientele and their fanciful "fun pirate waterfront resorts" and Joachim Muller-Lance's always spot-on, keen and subversively delightful observations on all things japanese. The presentations culminated with a great global overview of all things Pecha Kucha by PKN co-creator Mark Dytham himself who popped into town to help us out and help get out the good word to the hordes of Architects and other design lovers in attendance.
check the whole line-up and follow the links to their own works - too much good stuff to all mention in this space. pecha-kucha.org/cities/san-francisco/33
Cheers look for announcements of our next event in June,
