CHARITY FOUNDATION (HANDA)
3. GOOD COMPANY - LOT OF INTERESTING PEOPLE WHO ENJOY NETWORKING

PRESENTERS PKN SHANGAHI VOLUME 17:
Neale Mc. Goldrick - http://www.flickr.com/photos/smicphotoshop
This was a nice mixture of Photoshop compilations done by students of SMIC private school. How they perceived certain daily things and how they went about editing them in Photoshop.

Pascal Deseure - http://www.crystalcg.com/en/index.aspx
This presentation was done very energetic and spontaneous. Pascal represented crystal CG, the graphic company which did the immense scripture wall in the China national pavilion during world expo 2010. Very interesting to see how they achieved to magnify a painting that was so small onto a 16.000m2 wall.

Lucinda Holmes - http://lucindaholmes.org/home.html
Lucinda’s presentation was unlike any of the others, but still managed to capture us with the story behind the diagrams. Her slides were completely made out of lines (diagrams) which without story would normally not make much sense, maybe, but the story (poem) she told which each slide made the diagrams come to life.

Koala - http://qsykoala.blog.163.com/
Shiyin Qian a.k.a. Koala wrote a book on her findings/experience at OMA (Architecture Company). This is what she wanted to share with us and it was a delight to hear her side. She sketched a retrospective story of an insider’s view of architects life vs. work in extreme but normal (for architects as professions) conditions.

Michael Chen (HANDA) - http://www.handa-idea.org/
HANDA was one of the first charity foundations, which will be lent a helping hand in the future by Pecka Kucha Shanghai. He told us about his charity, leprosy in China with a lot of feeling which touched a lot of people that night. All the people could donate money to HANDA Thursday and 100% of the donations would go to leprosy villages in China to give the people better opportunities. Feel free to check out their website and see how you can still contribute to making a difference for these people.

Nicolas Lapierre - http://www.artvagabond.com/
Nicolas is an Architecture student who has explored the graffiti side of art. It was really nice to see that all his graffiti was done with ball pen. He showed us how graffiti comes to life and how it can contribute to architecture and other forms of art, without it being seen as juvenile expressions.

Noah Sheldon - http://noahsheldon.com/biosphere.html
Noah is a photographer who had the chance to photograph the Biosphere project in Arizona. This was a project funded by a billionair and had different aspects of Mother Nature represented in a glass dome. The project was a way for man to play God as Noah perceived, everything from air, temperature and water was regulated by men, in order to keep the flora and fauna alive. The project was a disaster, because it simply took too much money and effort to keep everything alive. This was nicely and interestingly illustrated during Noah’s presentation.

Bruno Porto - http://blog.brunoporto.com/
Bruno is a Brazillian graphic designer, who now lives in Shanghai. He had a funny approach to his “Dois Anos em Cartezes” exhibition. This exhibition was about 2 years in posters and how he had to adapt the same posters to different cultures without changing the basic graphics of that poster too much.

Serena Pollastri - http://www.designharvests.politecalab.org/
Serena and her colleague Fransesca were representing the Design Harverst project. They used this presentation to illustrate how the project (sustainable design & social innovation) contributed to the promotion of a new balance between rural and urban on the Island of Chongming (China).

Sherrie Dai - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1570150/
Sherrie was one of our dedicated speakers of the evening, especially for this PKN she took the train from Beijing (where she lives) to Shanghai. We really appreciated this effort and also her contribution as a speaker. Sherrie is a production designer who worked on a couple of blockbusters and great movies (Mummy, UltraViolet, Kite runner, Mission Impossible). She helped on different tasks necessary for creating the movie set. It was very interesting to see the depth of movie making from the other side. We got to experience how many American cities are replicated or constructed in China. Take a look at the Ultraviolet movie poster and you’ll see a remarkable thing which a lot of us didn’t notice till PKN.

Skyler Chen - http://www.chenskyler.blogspot.com/
This was also one of the inspiring presentations since Skyler had to face dyslexia when he was younger and it dominated some areas of his life. He did however find a way to express himself (since he didn’t really talk then), trough drawings. This is how he started his collection called “Republic of Norman”. He also showed us how he had actual actresses and actors play the roles or character from this collection.

THANK YOU ALL FOR PARTICIPATING IN THIS GREAT EVENT AND WE HOPE TO SEE YOU VERY SOON AT THE NEXT ONE ;)
