Professor Stanley Ira Hallet, FAIA
Architect and Professor, School of Architecture at The Catholic University of America
The Voyeur in Architecture and the Cinema
Former dean at the School of Architecture and Planning at the Catholic University of America, where he still teaches, but now in Paris and Rome, Stanley has been forever interested in the way diverse cultures define their habitat in the challenging landscape they choose to build in. Fascinated by cultural anthropology and geography, the interface between man and his environment, he has turned to the cinema, a media that continues to comment on such issues and has become particularly intrigued by the role of the audience, or to be more precise, the individual spectator, the observer, you may even say “the voyeur.” In his presentation he will try to illustrate how we as spectators continue to flip from one side of the proscenium to the other, in theater, in film, in architecture and finally in life. Little aware are we that as onlookers we are also the subjects of someone else’s construction, continually reframed by spectators regrouping just steps away from us.
Edgar Endress
Artist, Floating Lab Collective
For the Floating Lab Collective, a Metropolitan Washington DC area-based group of artists, inspiration comes from the community. The goal of the Floating Lab Collective is to be a collaborator and communicator about the social implications of being an artist and how it impacts society. For the creation of a Floating Museum, a food delivery truck was transformed into a mobile museum with the purpose of bringing artwork including video documentation, paintings and sculptures to the community instead of people having to go to a museum.
Carmen C. Wong
Art-Junkie, Banished Productions
A Tactile Dinner
Carmen Wong is an art-junkie who hails from Singapore. She was recently awarded a DCCAH Young Artist grant for Walk With Me an alternative audio walk depicting DC art life beyond the monuments. Inspired by the Futurists, Carmen adapted and directed A Tactile Dinner, a synaesthetic experience. Featuring new evocative menus, captivating visuals and choreography, diners who partake in A Tactile Dinner will never look at food the same way again.
Breeze Giannasio
Arts Coalition for Dupont Underground
Dupont Underground Rising
As a graduate student in interior design at the Corcoran College of Art + Design, and an attorney with Clarity Law Group, Breeze is also actively involved in The Dupont Underground Arts Coalition and chairs their Arts and Design Advisory Board. Through the adaptive reuse of the historic abandoned trolley station that lies directly beneath Dupont Circle, The Dupont Underground aims to establish a new landmark cultural institution to serve as a vital hub for innovative public exhibitions of contemporary art and design (including architecture, graphic design, new media technology, industrial, fashion, etc.). It aims to serve as a transformative incubator and accelerator for creative innovation and provide a physical cutting-edge locus for the diversity of the arts community to intersect.
Ellen Byerrum
Author of the Crime of Fashion mysteries
A Deadly Diva
Ellen Byerrum is a Washington, D.C., novelist, playwright and former news reporter,. She also holds a Virginia private investigator's registration. Her Crime of Fashion mysteries star a savvy, stylish sleuth: Lacey Smithsonian, a reluctant fashion reporter in Washington D.C., "The City Fashion Forgot." Lacey wants to work "hard news," but her nose for nuance, eye for a great story, and talent for getting into trouble all make her the right reporter for the Crimes of Fashion beat. In her vintage suits and killer heels she trips over fashion clues, fabulous shoes, dangerous women, drop-dead men, and the occasional corpse (who wouldn't want to be caught dead dressed like that).
Bruce MacPhail and Oli Robinson
Co-founders, Picnic Theatre Company
"The Hypochondriac" by Moliere
Outdoor summer theater productions to which people bring picnics and wine are very common in Europe. In this presentation Bruce and Oli tell the story of how they brought their adaptation of Moliere's "The Hypochondriac" to fruition in DC. The production will be at Dumbarton House on June 9th and 10th, but here they will give the audience an exclusive peak behind the scenes.
